Waterfront Place

Making history

The history of Waterfront Place is as remarkable as the building itself.

  • 1859

    Queensland was formally established as a self-governing colony of Britain separate from New South Wales.

  • 1879 - 80

    Brisbane's Port Office in Edward St was erected, complete with wharves and slipway. The site now occupied by Waterfront Place was part of Brisbane's original port.

  • 1888

    Naldham House (now the Brisbane Polo Club) was built for the Australasian United Steam Navigation Company.

  • 1970s

    The site was in ownership of both the Queensland Government and the Inchcape Group of the UK.

  • 1982

    F. A. Pidgeon and Son purchased the part of the site owned by the Inchcape Group with the intention of developing an office building in the future.

  • 1986

    Folkestone Limited decided to join the project, and entered into a joint venture arrangement with F. A. Pidgeon & Son. Obayashi Corporation of Japan was invited to participate on the basis of becoming the Project Head Contractor. The Joint Venture appointed Indosuez Australia to arrange finance. Cameron Chisholm & Nicol Architects were appointed to design the complex.

  • 1987

    Construction commenced in September.

     

  • 1989

    Construction was completed twenty seven months later on Christmas Eve 1989. In December AMP Society purchased the Waterfront Place complex from the Joint Venture partners.

  • 1990

    Waterfront Place was officially opened on 15 February by the Honourable Wayne Goss, the then Premier of Queensland.

  • 2003

    AMP Funds sold 20 percent of Waterfront Place to Ronin Property Group.

  • 2004

    Stockland Group purchased 50 per cent share of the Waterfront Place office tower and 100 percent share of the adjoining retail complex, Eagle Street Pier. Westpac purchased the remaining half share of Waterfront Place, later selling it to Stockland's unlisted property fund, Stockland Direct Office Trust No 1.

  • 2010

    Stockland embarked on its Refinement Program implementing virtually a complete modernisation of Waterfront Place, future-proofing its premier position for decades to come.

  • 2011

    13 January 2011 at approximately 5.00am - Brisbane Floods peaked at 4.45m (below the 1974 peak of 5.45m).

    May 2011 - 50 percent of Waterfront Place was acquired by Future Fund. The property is now owned in joint venture with the Stockland Group.

    July 2011 - CBRE appointed to manage Waterfront Place.

    November 2011 - Refinement program nearing completion and celebration of Waterfront Place 21st Birthday.
